About Pattern Detective

Pattern Detective: logic training in the browser

Pattern Detective covers seven puzzle families: arithmetic steps, geometric growth, alternating gaps, square numbers, Fibonacci-style sums, repeating shape cycles and growing shape counts. Every question has exactly one correct option and three plausible distractors.

The first puzzles start at your chosen difficulty, then climb every three questions. A hint points at the right kind of rule without giving the answer away. Once you answer, the explanation states the rule in full, whether you were right or wrong.

Options are generated rather than hand-written, but each generator validates that the answer appears exactly once and that distractors differ from it. Keyboard users can press 1–4 to answer and Enter to advance.

How to play

  1. Study the five shown cells and work out the rule.
  2. Choose the option that comes next. Use a hint only if you are stuck.
  3. Every answer reveals the rule, so a wrong guess still teaches you something.
  4. Eight puzzles per run. Difficulty climbs every three puzzles.

Tips

  • Check the gap between consecutive numbers before assuming a simple addition rule.
  • For shapes, count how many steps pass before the cycle repeats.
  • If two rules seem possible, choose the simplest one that explains every shown cell.

Pattern Detective FAQ

What kinds of patterns appear?

Arithmetic sequences, geometric sequences, alternating gaps, squares, Fibonacci-style sums, repeating shapes and growing shape counts. Each has a written explanation after you answer.

Do hints cost anything?

No. Hints are free, but each one slightly reduces the performance score used for XP, while accuracy still depends on correct answers.

Are the answers unambiguous?

Every generated question places one correct answer among three distinct distractors. The answer index is validated before the question is shown.
